🤷 Compared my 2018 iPad Pro with the 2024 iPad Pro

This morning, I was at the Chadstone shopping centre (apparently the largest shopping centre in the southern hemisphere).

I took my 2018 iPad Pro with the Magic Keyboard case to the Apple to compare with its 2024 counterparts.

After spending roughly 5 minutes, it's clear how great the 2018 hardware was and Apple at the time did an incredible job. Therefore, six years later, the iPad Pro, it's obviously a better iterative version of its 2018 creation.

The following are some thoughts:

  • Both devices look and feel very familiar. The bezels are just as bad or good. No difference in that regard.
  • The 2024 version is lighter but only marginally. It is not significant. It's not like now, it weighs more like the 11 inch versions of prior year iPad Pro.
  • It is thinner.. noticeably thinner.. Its incredible achievement, but having a thinner iPad Pro was not on my wish list.
  • The display is significantly better. OMG... so good. Yes, blacks look like black compared to looking kinda grey on my 2018 iPad. However, even in the 2022 iPad Pro, the blacks look really nice. The only time I watch media on the iPad is when I am on the plane which is less than 10 times a year. I prefer to watch it on my OLED TV at home. It's a lot better.
  • Magic Keyboard: the larger touchpad is very nice, and the lighter sits higher on the 2024 version compared to the 2018 version I have. Function Keys are delightful.

  • The older Magic Keyboard and Apple Pencil do not work with the 2024 version. This is the primary reason that I am not upgrading to the 2024 version. I do not want to spend $AUD800 on a new magic keyboard and apple pencil. It just makes little sense for me to do so. If I could use my existing accessories, I would have upgraded by now.

Concluding thoughts:
I walked away, a bit disappointed. I was hoping for more. But, what exactly was I hoping for.. 2024 iPad Pro is FANTASTIC, but so was my 2018 iPad Pro. Six years later, I am due for an upgrade.... I am looking for reasons to upgrade. I was hoping WWDC 24 would introduce a lot of reasons for me personally to upgrade. Sadly, not yet.
