🚢 Does the Boox Palma frequently contact its mothership?
I bought the Boox Palma in January 2024 and I am thrilled with it. I got the white one. Its better than the black one. This is not up for debate. If you think otherwise, you are likely incorrect (just kidding)
However, I wasn't thrilled to discover that Boox is a business
registered in China (own by Onyx International Inc). Therefore, when I
got the device, I took some steps to protect my privacy:
- I did not create an Onyx Account and thankfully it's not mandatory to do so.
- I used a secondary Google Account to log into the device, allowing me to download from the Google Play Store
- I added my NextDNS details to the Palma, allowing to me track its DNS queries and also block the ones I dislike.
After over 3 months, the statistics from NextDNS are reassuring. Thankfully, the Boox Palma is not one of those devices that constantly is calling home to its mother ship. This, I feel, is largely because I did not create an Oynx Account when I setup the device.Â
