👷‍♂️ How I use Windows with my Mac?

🖥️ setup

Recently, I have been reflecting on my Windows usage. Since 2010, I have been using Windows to earn a living. Since 2020, thanks to COVID, my employer shifted to a working from home solution. It is a hybrid solution that works relatively well.

Basically, I use a Windows desktop tower in the office which is connected to a 24 inch wide-screen monitor and a 19 inch monitor. It's a pretty decent computer with 500gb SSD and 16GB RAM running Windows 10.

Thankfully, I have the liberty of using my keyboard and mouse: Logitech MX Master 2 and Logitech G915 (with RGB lights off) keyboard. This combination works well because both support wireless connection via USB IR receiver. Because of security concerns, the IT team disabled Bluetooth. This is the same IT team that disabled Todoist, but Notion was safe to use. Go figure 🤷.

Anyway, when I am working from home which currently is 4 days a week, I am connecting to my work computer (in the office) via Citrix Workspace. It basically is an advanced form of screen share.

Since 2021, I have been using my 16inch M1 MacBook Pro to remotely use my work PC located 10km away to get my job done. We have software that is made for my organisation that will not run on macOS or Linux. However, I am mostly living out of the Microsoft Office suite of products which work well on any platform. I do not see my employer ever moving away from Windows.

Honestly, I have enjoyed using Apple computer at home to get my work done. I know it's not a native macOS experience once I am using Citrix. I use the magic keyboard, magic trackpad and also the Apple Studio display. It's a pleasant experience to use my MacBook to access my Windows work PC.

However, this delightful setup is ending soon. My organization will transition to a laptop setup within the next six to twelve months. Every employee will receive a Windows based laptop (likely DELL). In the office, I will dock my laptop to a 34-inch wide-screen monitor (this will be a nice upgrade). At home, I hope to connect it to my Apple Studio Display. Basically, my MacBook from that point onwards will be for personal use only 😿.

So, I will be one of those corporate people that has to carry a Dell laptop to and from work. This is also going to be painful. My rather weak back will not appreciate the weight of a dell laptop 😢.
