🤖 My Android Home Screen (April 2024)

Pixel Fold Unfolded Home Screen

I enjoy dark aesthetics. Actually, the phone is always in dark mode.

The Dock:

  • WhatsApp: the hub of communication with friends and family
  • HEY Email: the Rolex of email
  • Pocket Casts: best podcast app PERIOD
  • Todoist: task manager of choice and natural language support is the best
  • 1Password: the app I trust the most and that's why it holds over 2000 of my passwords.
  • The last one changes depending on use. Android attempts to predict what I would use at a point in time and, most times, its predication is dead right.

Notable Apps

Internet is actually a browser made by Samsung and their marketing team came up with the name Internet. Not a fan of the name but it is, by far, the best browser I have found on Android.

Day One: is the treasure box that keeps my thoughts and feelings, and everything else. I try to journal daily.

Kiwi Browser: It's the only browser on Android that runs the Bypass Paywall extension reliably. I do not use it for anything else.

HEY Calendar: Its not quite there yet for me, but it's heading in the right direction. The ability to edit calendar events in my Google and iCloud calendar will seal the deal. Currently, it can show these calendars, but only as read only.

Tailscale: I really need to write more about this app. For Android, amongst its many other useful features, it supports TailsDrop, which is a AirDrop alternative that works better than AirDrop and is multi-platform.

Notion: has slowly become my notes and everything app. These days, if I am writing anything, it is probably in Notion. I appreciate it can be as simple as one needs and expand as needed. I don't have a fancy dashboard and neither it's my LifeOS or second brain etc.

Fastmail: Giving it another go but not to replace HEY. I am moving some of my domains from Google Workspace (grandfathered into the free plan) to FastMail. I have a special relationship with Email services and apps. I cannot really explain it, nor can I justify it. I've made the choice to just accept it.

Home Assistant: self hosted on my Synology and I am actually having a lot of fun bringing all my smart devices to Home Assistant. Such a great and fun thing to do.

Beeper: Apple shattered my high hopes when it used its might to shut down iMessage on Beeper. However, that's old news now. Today, Beeper has a newly designed app on Android and is owned by Automattic. I am optimistic about its future.
